Episode #97 The Watershed Moment, It’s Time to Use Your Voice

December 13, 2017

I live in Hollywood, I moved here about a year ago from New York City where I lived for 15 years.  I’ve been in the movie/theater business since I was 12 years old so of course, I’ve been watching closely as Hollywood implodes.  I had planned to write about the incredible use of voice and then I saw an Oprah interview and knew that what we are seeing, the incredible number of people using their voice is, as she says, “A watershed moment.”

In this midst of this nightmare, I believe the incredible use of voice must be made mention of.  I believe it is a watershed moment and I knew it was coming for a long time.  I’ve been coaching voices of business leaders, entrepreneurs and actors around the globe for almost 30 years and I know just how important what we do with our voice is but even more so that we use it.

People that come to work with me generally say they don’t feel/sound confident, captivating or compelling.  But what ends up coming out in the work is that they don’t feel heard and for many of them they don’t even use their voice anymore because well, what’s the point.

I believe that everyone is an answer and the only way we can change the world is to use our voice, be the answer to someone’s problem, share our stories and as my tagline says, speak our truth beautifully.

For years I’ve been encouraging people and teaching them how to implement effective communication and voice strategies to use their voice, to share their message and to change the world.  The benefits of that include sounding and feeling more confident, captivating the audience, creating better connections and ultimately getting more of what you want in your personal and professional life.  However, there is another huge benefit of using your voice which makes it so important.  Sure, when we use our voice we gain an internal peace and freedom but when we use our voice, share our thoughts, feelings, emotions, and stories we also give other people to do the same. Just by using your voice you open the door for others to feel safe to use their voice.  It just takes one voice to change everything.

Personally, using your voice can and will change lives, yours and everyone you speak to.  Professionally, it’s crucial now more than ever to get visible on video and podcast.  Voice is the way of the future and it’s no longer an option to not be seen and heard.  People want to know who you are, and science has proven that we determine everything about you from the sound of your voice.  Are you letting us hear who you really are or are you protecting your words and your voice, playing small and safe?  It’s time to speak up, find your voice and be heard because that is the way we will change lives and the world.

Most of the people that I work with don’t like the sound of their voice.  I get that because my method is the psychology of the voice.  The stories that we’ve been told, the experiences we’ve had shape how we use our voice and for some that’s not at all, other’s their voice is just not captivating the room.  But, it’s time to use your voice.  It’s possible to be more captivating but what really matters right now is that you use your voice period.  It’s time to speak your truth, just do it beautifully.  Trust me, the benefits and the freedom of finding the courage to do so will change your life in ways you never dreamed possible.
